The movie and even the tittle is inspired by the historical event that took place in Cape Town in South Africa in 1966, the area was called District 6 which proclaimed by the apartheid regime as whites-only area.

In the movie in 1990 an huge alien ship stops directly over Johannesberg, South Africa a footage shows part of the ship (supposed to be a command module) falling to Earth leaving the ship unable to operate.The rest of the ship hovers above for nearly three months without making any contact.

Finally the humans cut their way inside where they find malnourished and leaderless arthropod-like aliens.The aliens are later assessed as apparently being all workers, with their leader mysteriously missing(it is hypothesized that the plague might have wiped the leaders off).

These aliens are called “prawns” as a derogatory reference to the sea creature. these aliens are taken from the ship and housed the in a government camp. Overcrowding and militarization eventually turn the area into a slum known as District 9.

28 years later, Patience over the alien situation has run out and control over them has been contracted to Multinational United (MNU), a private military contractor(that shows little regard for the aliens’ welfare). MNU is interested in using the aliens’ advanced weaponry, but these weapons can only be operated  by using alien DNA, thus making it useless to humans.

MNU starts to relocates 1.8 million aliens to District 10, a new camp 240 kilometers from Johannesburg.Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is an MNU field operative assigned to manage the relocation operation.During the process of eviction of the aliens, Wikus confiscates a device found from an alien shack which sprays some of the liquid present in side on Wikus face. The main story begans from here showing Wikus left arm mutating into a claw exactly like that of a prawn.When the MNU discovers this they try to use him to produce a key to use the alien weapons. Wikus escapes and helps the alien return to there home land in exchange the alien will transform Wikus back to human. Series of  battle between aliens, MNU and other groups occur. In the end the alien escapes with a promise that they will come back to transform Wikus back to human.

Overall the movie is good, thought provoking with some good action. Though it is certainly not best movie of the year.
